This classic couple is the subject of The Great Ziegfeld, a decent biopic most notable for its show-stopping version of Irving Berlin’s “A Pretty Girl Is Like A Melody,” which featured over 180 dancers. That said, some of their Best Picture choices were questionable then and they’re questionable now. But, in fairness, it’s instructive to consider the time period, the available moviemaking technology, the mood of the voting body, and the quality of the films in a given year.
