Core weakness will limit how long you can hold you position without your arms for support. The fit principle is to position the seat fore/aft for balance (arms unweighted), then use stem and spacers to bring the bars to your hands in the proper position arm with about a 15-30° bend at your elbows when on the hoods, and minimal load on the arms. A simple test - when on the hoods can you release your grip relax your arms and transition to an upright position without pushing off with your hands/arms? If not then you need to refit and work on core strength. If you have a core weakness and a fit that doesn't accommodate that weakness you probably will fall forward. If the bike is set up right for you then your balance should be such that you can, while pedaling under light load with your hands on the hoods, take your hands off the hoods and move them to behind your seat without falling forward. The 10 mm difference in stem length isn't the issue - that change is too small. Eventually any weak spots may present pain. That leads to prolonged tension in the shoulders/back/neck, and transmits the load to the shoulders, and from there to your back. My SWAG would be your back pain is related to a lack of core strength and you're carrying too much of your upper bodyweight on your arms. shorter stem should be easier to the body. What could be the issue? Saddle position? New to narrow bar and riding position? I don't know. Road bike has 42cm wide bar and my armpit to armpit distance is 40cm. I feel the pain starting after 30mins of ride with the road bike. I have two bikes with flat bars (around 60cm wide) one with shorter and one with longer reach than this road bike and I've ridden 5 hour long rides with them without any issues. I feel like it goes a way a bit when I ride on the drop. I changed back 100mm and rode once and didn't feel pain. The pain spot is about the size of a finger tip. The pain is not intense, but kind slight discomfort. ![]() I started to feel slight pain in the left side of my back around the middle of my back vertically. It came with 100mm stem and I felt a bit sterched out riding on the hoods so I switched to 90mm stem so I had the same reach as I would have had with the smaller frame. I was between two sizes and got the larger one because it had 15mm larger stack. I got my first road bike (endurance type).
